Provide Tax Preparation Assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an IRS and community-sponsored program designed to assist low to moderate income taxpayers with the preparation of their annual tax returns at no cost.

From January 29 to April 15, 2024, taxpayers who earn $65,000 or less can receive tax assistance from the VITA program’s knowledgeable staff managed by the IRC virtually or in person at the following six sites: Dallas TX, Denver CO, Elizabeth NJ, New York City NY, Phoenix AZ or Salt Lake City UT.

Provide Tax Preparation Assistance:

Become a Volunteer Tax Preparer and provide free, professional tax preparation services for low-income clients through IRC’s National Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The IRC is actively recruiting for tax volunteers until December 31st. No previous experience is needed, and training will be provided. In-person and remote opportunities are available. All roles require a commitment from January through April 2024.

  • Tax Preparer & Quality Reviewer: Under the supervision of the Tax Site Coordinator and Financial Coach, Volunteer Tax Preparers will provide free, professional tax preparation services for low-income clients through IRC’s National Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Learn more »

  • Tax Screener: Under the supervision of the Tax Site Coordinator, Volunteer Tax Screeners will ensure that taxpayers have all the necessary information and documents required to complete a tax return. Learn more »

  • Tax Site Coordinator: Under the supervision of the Tax Site Sr. Associate and local IRC Financial Coach, the Tax Site Coordinator Volunteer supports the coordination and day-to-day administration of the IRC’s National Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Salt Lake City. Please note that all volunteers must sign up for a mandatory General IRC SLC Volunteer Orientation (SignUp Link), where they speak about the history of IRC, expectations of an IRC volunteer, and the process of all volunteers getting a background check. No volunteer can meet clients until a background check has been cleared.

Important Tax Prep Volunteer Dates:

  • November - December: VITA Orientations

  • December: Volunteer Tax Certification Training (2 cohorts)

  • January: Take test and get certified!

  • February 1 - April 15: Tax Preparation Season

Receive Tax Preparation Assistance:

Tax return preparation assistance will be provided in a safe, culturally- and linguistically-appropriate manner, and will be available at the Utah Refugee Center at 150 North 1950 West in Salt Lake City beginning on January 29, 2024 on Mondays from 1-5pm and Fridays from 9am-1pm. (Map)
