IRC UT’s Financial Capability
The IRC in Utah’s Financial Capability Program supports individuals and families in building the knowledge, confidence, and tools needed to achieve long‑term financial stability.
Our services are available to anyone in the community, regardless of background or citizenship. While the IRC has deep experience supporting refugees and new Americans, our financial capability services are open to all individuals who want to strengthen their financial wellbeing.
Financial Coaching & Education
At the core of our Financial Capability Program is one‑on‑one financial coaching combined with group education. We meet clients where they are and tailor support to their goals, experience, and priorities.
One‑on‑One Financial Coaching
Financial coaching provides personalized, confidential support to help clients:
Set realistic and meaningful financial goals
Create and maintain a household budget
Review spending, income, and savings strategies
Navigate financial challenges and major life transitions
Coaches work alongside clients to provide accountability, encouragement, and practical guidance over time.
Financial Literacy Classes
We offer financial literacy education ranging from basic to advanced topics, designed to build skills progressively.
Topics may include:
Understanding banking and financial accounts
Budgeting and cash‑flow management
Saving strategies and emergency funds
Understanding credit reports and credit scores
Debt management and financial decision‑making
Preparing for major expenses and long‑term goals
Classes are offered in group settings and may complement individual coaching.
Credit Review, Repair & Strengthening
Access to credit is a key part of financial stability. Our program helps clients:
Review credit reports
Understand how credit scores work
Identify and address errors
Strengthen credit over time through education, action plans, and credit‑building tools
Coaches help clients build credit safely and sustainably—not quickly or at risk.
Financial Capability Programs
In addition to coaching and education, the Financial Capability Program offers access to the following services. Each program has specific eligibility requirements.
Individual Development Assistance (IDA)
IDAs are matched‑savings programs that help eligible participants save toward major goals such as:

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free, high‑quality tax preparation for individuals and families earning $75,000 or less.
VITA helps taxpayers:
File accurate returns

Credit‑building loans
Auto and auto‑refinance loans

How We Work With Clients
Financial capability is a journey, not a one‑time service. We work closely with clients over time to help them:
Build financial skills
Increase stability and resilience
Make informed financial decisions
Move toward long‑term goals
Some services or programs may have eligibility requirements based on funding sources. Our team will help you understand what options are available to you.
